The Blessings of General Conference

Dearest Sister,

During the next few weeks we will have the opportunity to partake of a spiritual feast as we participate in the General Women’s meeting on March 29th at 6pm and General Conference the week following. We are blessed, just as in the days of King Benjamin, to gather with our families and hear the word of the Lord from his chosen leaders.
The Church has described the General Women’s meeting as an opportunity “to gather in a spirit of worldwide sisterhood.” It will likely be the largest gathering of Latter-day Saint women in the Church ever and perhaps one of the largest gatherings of women in the world. Church leaders have also encouraged us to invite our friends of other faiths to attend with us and to feel the Spirit that is there.
Elder Jeffery R. Holland said, “I say with all the fervor of my soul that never in my personal or professional life have I ever associated with any group [the Bretheren] who are so in touch, who know so profoundly the issues facing us, who look so deeply into the old, stay so open to the new, and weigh so carefully, thoughtfully, and prayerfully everything in between. I testify that the grasp this body of men and women have of moral and societal issues exceeds that of any think tank or brain trust of comparable endeavor of which I know anywhere on the earth.” I feel strongly that as each of us prepares spiritually for this meeting, we will be taught from on high and the Spirit will touch our hearts to teach us and give us answers to the questions we have and the direction we seek.
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf has given us direction on how we better prepare for general conference and said, “there are messages in each general conference given as a gift and a blessing from heaven specifically for our personal life situations.” President Uchtdorf encouraged us not to discount a message just because it sounds familiar and emphasized that the words spoken at general conference should be “a compass that points the way for us during the coming months.”
We live in a remarkable time when we have instant access to the words of prophets and apostles, and our women leaders. Let us be nourished by the spiritual feast that comes from attending, hearing and reviewing these general conference addresses. They are inspired of God and we’ll be blessed as we listen and hearken to their counsel.

Much love,

Julia Kirkland
